UX Design | Google Certificate Design Project | 2023

Summary

My Roles :

This is an individual project that allowed me to plan and direct each step of the design thinking process as a UX strategic design student with mobile UI design experience.

Responsibilites:

  • Conduct user research

  • Define the problem and provide insights to inform the ideation phase

  • Define personas, user journeys, empathy maps, and user flows

  • Visual design of low-fi and high-fi wireframes, prototypes, and user testing

The Problem

Hoarding behaviour fills living spaces with excessive belongings, leading to safety hazards, health risks, functional impairment, social isolation, legal issues, and emotional distress. Excessive accumulation of gear and supplies related to recreational activities, potentially leading to clutter, disorganisation, and space limitations.

Solution

Without a streamlined solution, individuals are hindered in their efforts to declutter and optimise their living spaces while also missing out on potential opportunities to generate income from their unused gear. Developing a user-friendly mobile application specifically tailored for buying and selling used sports and outdoor equipment could address these pain points, providing a convenient platform for enthusiasts to declutter their belongings, find affordable gear, and contribute to a more sustainable and circular economy within the sports and outdoor community.

Research

Design thinking process

Research Questions

  • What is the root cause of hoarding?

  • What do they think about hoarding? How do they deal with hoarding habits?

  • Are people around them aware of the problem? How do they deal with it?

Research Method

Interview

5 Participants including all ages with hoarding issues.

Ask a set of interview questions, observe and record behaviors and attitudes.

Personas

Herewith the one of the example of the personas in this project.

Key takeaways

Throughout the research, I discovered that hoarding has core needs to get rid of things.

Recognize and Acknowledge:

The first step is to acknowledge that hoarding is a problem and be open to seeking help. Recognize the impact hoarding has on their life and those around them.

Practice Decision-Making Skills:

Develop decision-making skills to help them assess the value and importance of items. Challenge perfectionism and the need to keep everything, and learn to let go of things that no longer serve a purpose.

To address these key takeaways, I will focus more on how to make users with hoarding issues to help them decide the value of the items and how to sort it out.

Ideation

brainstorming and sketches

To generate idea effectively, I used the “Crazy 8” design thinking process to generate creative ideas and explore different solutions to a problem. As I started to brainstorm solutions, I sketched my idea to draw down these ephemeral sparkles in my mind. The common solution is to create a way to sell their items with irresistible rewards which is money. I decided to explore more in this direction in solving this problem.

Prototype

Sitemap (information architect)

wireframe and Low-fidelity prototype

After I created the sitemap, I sketch some paper wireframe and create a paper prototype. After deciding on a few designs and finalizing the paper wireframe, I turned it into a digital wireframe. After that, I turned the design into a Lo-Fi prototype. Then, I test the prototype with 4 participants by conducting a usability study.

However, after doing the usability study, users are unhappy about the check out process where no confirmation notification shows the transaction has been confirmed and users having hard time to identify the seller on the item display page and would like to know more about the seller. Thus, I made some changes to the design in the mockup and Hi-fidelity Prototype.

Mockup and Hi-fidelity Prototype

Based on the usability study, I added a confirmation page on check out and a seller details on the item display page.

Final Reflection

After the project ends, I continue to obtain UX/UI feedback from designers with more experience in the field to improve design.
